Get past the uninspiring title, and you are in for an imaginative and exciting plot set in Upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, which juts into Lake Superior like a curved finger. Timmerman's descriptions of the snowiest land in the Lower 48 is so powerful that Keweenaw's frozen landscape becomes a character in its own right in the book. This is a fast-paced adventure novel, fueled by Joe Little Deer's PTSD flashbacks from his time as a sniper in Afghanistan and his determination to save a little kidnapped girl. An interesting assortment of characters.
